Idle and Shifting

I have a recently rebuilt 70 hp. I took it out yesterday and at the end of the day I noticed that it was idling higher than normal as I was puttering to the dock. When I cycled between neutral, forward and reverse, it did not transition smoothly, but almost like a grinding noise/feeling. Would a higher idle cause such an action?

Re: Idle and Shifting

very much so. adjust you idle speed screw, IN THE WATER, and IN GEAR. get it as low as you can, without the motor stalling in gear. prederably 600 -700 rpms. it will idle faster in neutral.
