Idle Problem

Purchased a 1989 Bayliner Capri 1700 with a Force 85 same year. Engine is hard to start and idle. Dies when put in reverse most of the time. The boat had about 10 gallons of 2 year old gas in it when I purchased. I ran it through the engine on the lake. Runs smooth when I can get it going.

I changed the plugs, tried adjusting the carbs at idle starting at 1 1/2 turns and finding the middle between rich and lean.

I found that when adjusting the second carb I would turn clockwise and the Idle would increase all the way to the stop (jet seated)and the engine is at its highest idle. I would back off a little and idle would decrease. Other two carbs would missfire as I hit the lean point about 3/4 turn from seated.

The other test was a compression test. Cyl 1 and 2 are 125 lbs, cyl 3 - 95 lbs.

Could the second carb be gummed up from the bad gas? Looking for next step recommandations.

Thanks

Re: Idle Problem

The problem lies on the cyl with 95 psi...Please remove the head and check for a blown head gasket or scoring on that cyl.<----damaged piston.

TMD

Re: Idle Problem

Thanks, What AM I looking for in a blown head gasket? A crack in it?

What do you think about the no 2 carb idle jet bottoming out and engine idling at higher RPM?

Thanks again.
