I'm looking for some help with my Evinrude 48. I had been working on it about three-weeks ago, then I broke down and took it into the shop to be looked at. They checked the compression on both cylinders (good at 125 each) and they adjusted the carbs (both carbs where installed new last year). When they gave it back to me, they said it was AOK and ready for water.

I took it to the lake, started it up, and ran it with the choke for a couple minutes to warm it up. When I took it off the choke (in neutral) it still ran, but seemed very rough. When I tried to place it into gear, it would die. This happened five or six times, until finally the boat started to move. Once moving, it ran fine. I zipped around the lake for about a 1/2 hour, running it pretty hard, then slowed down to idle (neutral) and it stopped again. I tried to start it, but it wouldn't fire up right away, so I opened up the motor and adjusted up the idle, and got it started. Ran fine in gear again, but then when I went to neutral, it acted like it was going to die again (I was back at the dock).

Any suggestions on what I can do??? When the boat is running in gear it does well (including WOT), but it doesn't like to idle and it dies when I try to put it into gear. HELP!

I'm also getting a little fuel leakage/puddles in the housing, but I've heard this is common. Please let me know if this is not true.

If your shop said it was AOK and it is not you should be asking them. They do stand behind their work????

Sounds like you have an air/fuel leak somewhere. Fuel line, bad gasket or something. Sounds like there might still be some stuff in the low speed jet. When it is running rough pump the primer bulb and see if it helps. At least it will pin down if it is a fuel problem or not. Someone else will be along shortly with better advice.

I don't type as fast as SoLittle or get to the correct conclusion as he did. Shop should make it right.

I called the shop from my cell phone when I was dead in the middle of the lake, but before someone from service got to the phone, I got the motor going. I'll be calling them on Monday, but I had big plans this weekend (Hardy Lake in Southern Indiana). I'm looking for any easy fixes if I can find them. The trolling motor isn't as much fun...

Is a rough idle on these motors common? Any simple fixes I should look for (thanks for the primer bulb suggestion). I'm still a newbie with outboards, so I appreciate any help!

Like the other folks said try the shop first. My guess is that the carbs need the "link & synch" proceedure done. It is just a matter of adjusting the linkage between the throttle cable, carbs, and timing advance. My motor had the same symptoms you have and the link & synch took care if it. In my case, the timing was not advanced far enough at idle to make enough power to prevent stalling when put in gear.

If the shop had the carbs off or disconnected the linkage, it could have gotten out of adjustment. They fire it up and it runs good, but without a field test or test prop, they wouldn't know it stalls.

Mark42 - Thanks for the info. They didn't pull off the carbs, but your explaination sounds like a winner. I'll ask them to look into the "link and sync" and advanced timing adjustment.

Can anyone out there explain what a "link and sync" procedure is?

Re: Idle Problems With 1988 48HP SPL Evinrude

Link & Sync in my Johnson/Evinrude manual is multi step proceedure for sinchronization and linkage adjustments of the throttle cable, carb linkage and timing advance linkage. It involves measuring distances between linkage pivot points to within a 1/16" and ensuring that when a lever is moved to a defined location, other parts move to their proper locations.

Took me about 1/2 hour with a good ruler, screwdriver and pliers. Most linkage ends are ball joints that pop apart when pried on properly, then can be screwed in or out to adjust length, than pop back on. Also a good time to put a dab of grease on the linkage ball joints.

All adjustments can be made with the engine off except max spark advance and idle speed in gear.

Just be aware I am speaking from experience with my 40hp motor only. Im sure things are different on other models/hp, but the principle should still be the same.

Hardy Lake is a great place. Used to fish Starve Hollow too. There will be other weekends.
