Hrllo0 sll nre to this site looks like theres a lot of smart people on hear with great advice so id figur id give it a try, so heres my problem.

I just bought an old 1975 16 foot columbian fiberglass with a 1973 Evinrude 50 hp 2 stroke. The motor runs well but the idle is giving me some problems. I have to push the chock almost all the way up for it to even start and then let it warm up, now once i try to throw it in gear im lucky to get it to go into drive without stalling. i have to throw the control really quickly into drive to get it to start turning over. Im sure this is because i screwed with the position of those idle screws? probly the wrong name i just dont have my manual here at work. any ways i cant find the proper direction to point them towards also probably in the manual. I am going to try a tune up but i dont want to go buying plaus and wires when i dont need them and all it could be is a filter or something. asnyways she runs good and strong once i get it into gear, but once i slow down it will stall and i look like an idiot at the dock with my 16 foot boat and padle:mad: anyways i feel like its and easy fix and one of you who have seen this before could help me out. anyways thanx a lot guys and take care.

Re: idle problems

Go to the FAQ and look for a thread by Joe Reeves regarding setting the needles. Is also likely that you are in for a carb bath/rebuild as well, followed by a linc n sync. Be sure the idle is set to 650 to 750 RPM under load in gear.
