Hello I have a 1989 Johnson VRO 110

What is the correct RPM at Idle for this engine? the idle was very loose and the engine would stall after sitting at idle for a few min's so I have adjusted the idle so that it is not so loose and it idles at 1500rpm with the new adjustment, I can back it off if I need to. It sounds good at 1500 but I want to make sure I am not running over idle.

The idle is at cold start I am using muffs so I am not sure if the idle would be lower in the water or not and when it warms fully.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know how much difference there would be if you put it in the water. I think that 1500 is a bit high. I wouldn't want it be over 800-1000. Too high of rpm's and it will "hammer" into gear and is hard on gears etc. Is there a low speed screw on the carburator? If there is I would adjust the idle down and then adjust the low speed idle screw to make it idle smooth. That is just my opinion I am sure others on here may have different input but I am sure someone else will respond shortly.:)

never rev over 1500 on muffs, can cause a run away, that you cannot shut down. the jets on the carb are fixed, your idle on muffs, around 850, idle in the water should be around 650-700 with the motor in gear. if yo have problems at that, consider a carb rebuild and link n sinc.

Ok I will back the idle down, the carbs were rebuilt before I bought the boat a few weeks ago.
