j60tletd. just completed carb rebuild and working on fine tuning. 2 questions: what should my rpms be at idle (neutral) and what should they be in gear? reason i ask is i think it should be reading at around 750 rpm in gear, but the motor tends to go a bit higher when i shift back into neutral.

thanks in advance.

It will always be higher in neutral. It is always set in gear between 600 and 650 RPM.

it also has to be set with the engine in the water..cannot be fine tuned on muffs. as there is no back pressure on the exhaust.

thanks for the replies. the manual says between 6 and 700 in gear. i'm right at that, so I'll leave well enough alone.

the reason for these setting is so you don't damage the clutch dog in the lower unit. you really want it to idle as low as it will with out stalling. when put in gear forward to reverse. when shifting from neutral to either gear make it a swift shift, rather than a slow shift and you hear the gear grind.
