I have a 1986 35 hp Mercury engine I just installed a Tiny Tach on. It show the engine is idled at 1000 rpms. I need to know what the tach should be showing. It came from the manufacturer set at 360 degrees [1 spark per revolution]. I extended the wire lead by about 18 inches with stranded wire and it seems to be working correctly while running the engine on water muffs. I haven't had a chance to try it out on the water yet. Thanks

1000 sounds reasonable.
When installing a ignition driven tach on any marine application, it is wise to check the accuracy of your installation by utilizing a optical tach to compare readings. As you probably noticed, length and position of sensor wire effects readings. A optical tach can be purchased from ebay for about $12.

If in N you are fine. This translates to approx 700 rpms when in the water and in F gear which is where my service manual says mine should be........essentially fast enough to not die at idle or starting acceleration, but not so fast as to crunch your gears.
