The idle speed adjuster on my 40302D is a large slotted screw with a spring beneath it. That's what the parts diagram seems to show. On my 40352D there is what looks like it might have once been a plastic or nylon hex-shaped(?) shaft coming up out the hole. If I hadn't seen the parts diagrams I might have thought that a knob of some kind would fit down on top of this.

The parts diagrams show the same two parts for both models - 304573 (screw) & 309247 (spring).

Any idea what this plastic shaft is all about? I thought I'd double check before I pull the screw and spring off the 40302 and install it on the 40352. Thanks.

That's all there is to it--a plastic screw with a knurled head and a spring below. Actually, most have a metal screw imbeded inside the plastic to make it stronger.

OK, I didn't realize that the screw is supposed to be plastic. When I removed it today I could see that it had been bent over on the bottom because it wasn't strong enough ...and the head was gone.

The screw from the 40302D appears to be brass or possibly bronze??? I guess that was actually the non-original item then, based on what you're saying. Any reason I can't use it, though - concern about wearing the cam on the throttle linkage perhaps?

Thanks, F_R.

Somebody made a substitution. I used to do it too. Use it.
