Idle speed, Why the big variance?

Guys,

I read and got a lot of exellent advice and information posted in this forum about idling speed and adjusting the same while in the water and not on earmuffs ext. I gather that the idling speed for my 60 Hp mariners (3 cyl)should be around 850 to 900 when running free. When I put into gaer under torque it should drop by about 50 to 100 rpm.

The portside motor is exactly in that range. The other however was idling at 900 but dropped to 700 when in gear. By adjusting the idling speed while in gear and in the water up to 800 rpm, the free idle speed goes up to 1200 RPM.

Qustion, why the "big" drop in revs when I engage into gear.

Is it spark advance, compression or idle mixture?

Re: Idle speed, Why the big variance?

hello
wow
if your shifting with a running speed of 1200 rpm you can expect a shiftclutch/fwd gear failure. be aware that some gears are only avalible now as sets. something is wrong.
it should idle well at about 800 rpm in nuetral in the water and 700 to 750 in gear.
test spark and compression then start looking at fuel pumps and carbs for any defects.
good luck and keep posting

Thanks for the advice Rodbolt.

I will check the spark and compression.
