Idle stabilizer-erratic tach

I have read where most people suggest removing the idle stabilizer, especially if it is causing problems. While replacing my stator, I noticed the red wire from the idle stabilizer shorted against the switch box. I just removed it as people suggested.
While running my boat last weekend, I noticed the tach seemed to jump around a lot at idle. As soon as I gave it gas, it smoothed out and ran steady, but at idle it jumps around a little too much.
Could removing the idle stabilizer be causing this?
Can I test the idle stabilizer to see if it still works?
I can easily repair the shorted section of wire if necessary.
Re: Idle stabilizer-erratic tach

The tach problems are more likely due to the fact that you removed the stator in some way. Check the yellow stator wires and the rectifier etc. I've seen a dieing rectifier do this too.

The idle stabilizer isn't part of the tach circuit at all.

-W
