Idle Stabilizer Question...

I bought a boat with a 1984 115hp I6 that has a blown #1. Upon tearing the motor down, I noticed that the red wire running from the idle stabilizer to the lower switch box is completely toast.
Could this faulty wire have led to the demise of this motor? I plan to disconnect the idle stabilizer when I rebuild regardless.

Re: Idle Stabilizer Question...

If the bias wire from the idle stabilizer shorts to ground, it very severely advances the ignition timing.

Maybe that's why Murkery doesn't even sell them anymore.

If John wasn't clear enough, trash it and don't even think of replacing it.

Re: Idle Stabilizer Question...

When you get the guts back together and set it up. Book probably calls for 19 degrees BTDC at WOT. Set it at 23 WITHOUT THE STABILIZER.

hope it helps

Re: Idle Stabilizer Question...

Would this also be recommended for any merc engine inc an I6 1979 140hp?

Re: Idle Stabilizer Question...

Thats odd. I have a box that is about 4x2x1.5 inches? Its bolted on to the metal plate at the front of the engine and faces the carbs. On the wiring diagram it said it was an idle stabiliser?

Thanks John!

Adios to the idle stabilizer ;)

Chris,
Just noticed yer engine is a I6. Timing I quoted is for a V6. Don't know what yer max should be, but someone here does.

sorry
John

Re: Idle Stabilizer Question...

Chris your timing from Mercury is 21* at cranking speed this is about 23*. Due to the characteristics of the ignition system Mercury's retard timing about 2* at WOT.
I would recommend reducing the WOT timing to 19* due to the quality of any of today's fuels. You will not notice any difference in how the engine runs but will be less prone to detonation. At cranking speed this will equal about 21*.
I always recheck my timing on all motors at WOT. You can do this at the river or lake without taking the boat off the trailer. Just back it in until the split between the lower unit and the mid section is at water level. Let the engine warm up as normal.
Using a good timing light check the timing at WOT, the rpm's should be somewhere around 4500 - 5000 rpm. Only take the throttle up to this for a few seconds, it is all you need to check timing. Make any adjustments with the engine off. Have a friend operate the throttle or disconnect the throttle cable and manually advance the throttle. This must be done in gear, prop on, in the water. Never rev a motor not in gear, on the hose without a load.
May scare the hell out of ya the first time!

Re: Idle Stabilizer Question...

Ed, A 1979 Merc 140 is a distributor based inline six motor. As far as I know they never had idle stabilizers. They do have a switchbox with six or seven wires on it, bolted to the front cowling support, facing the carbs.

Chris I have coil packs no distributor insight...

This is what I was talking about:

I need to go and take another look now! :)

And this is my wiring:

Re: Idle Stabilizer Question...

Ed, In the parts list I consulted they have the '79 140 listed as having ADI and Distributor ignition, depending on the model number. It may have been a crossover year for the ADI. Neither model had a listing for an idle stabilizer, however. It appears that the parts list I consulted has some diffferences from reality.
