Hi There,

I'm a new member here with a new to me 2006 Regal 1900 GXI with a fuel injected 4.3L Volvo Penta with 45 hours on it.

I've been having two problems:

1. High idle speed around ~2,200 rpm.
What I plan to do
My plan is to look around for vacuum leaks and find/adjust the IAC.

2. Motor is stalling above 3,000 rpm under load due to what I believe is fuel starvation.
Things I've done
The boat has been completely drained of its old gasoline and refilled as well as treated with Marine Stabil.Since last week, I've changed the spark plugs (volvo iridiums), checked compression (180psi +/-5psi all around), installed a new fuel filter and cleaned out my fuel pump assembly, fuel pressure regulator and fuel pumps. There was a whine coming from the fuel pumps that turned out to be my pumps starving for fuel because of debris blocking the filter screens. After doing some searching, I found that Volvo Penta fuel assemblies have paint inside them that begins to peel with ethanol in gasoline that clogs up the fuel system. http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engin...uel-cell-5-0gi

What I plan to do
a. The electrical connector to my low pressure pump looks a little corroded so that was what I was going to replace next however it looks like its only sold as an entire engine harness for ~$1,000. Does anyone know where I can by the connector and pigtail to replace the existing one?

b. I'm also planning to check the fuel pressure at the low pressure pump shraeder valve and at the fuel rail to determine which pump is the culprit of my fuel issue.

c. I have a new fuel pump assembly on order just in case but its really my last resort to replace this unit since its $600+

Should I also plan to send out my injectors for cleaning or should I just run techron through the tank and call it a day?

Anything else I should try?

Any help on either issue is greatly appreciated

Thanks,
Dayne

Remove the fuel pressure regulator and check the screen; the screen is removable and they get dirty with bad fuel. The IAC is probably your high idle prob. Your stalling problem is probably the high pressure pump - the shrader valve on the fuel rail is the one you should be worried about. The HP fuel pump craps out if it sits for a long time too, not just ethanol. Volvo says 90 days is the longest they should go without running or run premix through the pump to prevent damage - I have a pile of bad ones....

FYI I don't think the fuel pump assy is a returnable part

The water line outlet for the fuel pump assy goes to the port riser so I would make sure your risers are in good shape - I know only 45 hrs but if it was in salt it could be a problem

I would do the stuff above before injectors - I have seen some motors in bad shape and haven't ran into too many injector problems.

The problem ended up being the cap and rotor.

Thanks for the help guys.

FYI: I was able to return the fuel pump assembly as it was unopened in its original packaging.
