idle tooooo high

i have a 1982 blueband merc
s/n 06093940
it idles way to high and crunches into gear
when looking at carbs on the right hand side is a thing that you can turn
my question is
is this the idle screw

Hammy, The barrel nut on the throttle cable is the adjustment for the idle speed. When the barrel nut is adjusted properly, it should push the throttle plate of the carbs (closed) against the idle stop screw. The screw on the carb is for idle mixture adjustment. Don't mess with it, unless it is misadjusted.

thanks chris yes i would describe it as a barrel nut so is that one ok to play with

disconnect the cable at the engine. then manually push the throttle linkage so it hits the idle stop. now adjust the cable so that you can reconnect with out moving the engine part.
