idles up when put in neutral?

idles fine when started ,then when put in forward then neutral it revs in neutral hard to put back in gear? still new here and still learning ?
1985 force 50hp
model 507x5a
serial 1916
us marine
any help i would greatly appreciate!!

Believe it or not, it most likely is the lower shift rod binding. First check the shift linkage on the side of the engine for binding. The, if it is ok, drop the lower unit and check the lower shift rod for binding. It should be snug but move silky smooth.

linkage on side of motor was binding all is good again!
