If the Magnapower I CD box (Motorola or Delta) fail on a 3-4 cyl. beltdriven distributor ign. system engine (Chrysler 70-140Hp about 1966-1980) there are four or maybe five!!! ways do go.

1. Buy a new factory made CD box if it is possible.......really expensive 350-400 dollars (not really sure about the price).

2. Buy a used factory made CD box....... can be cheap, but for how long will it work?

3. Buy a new aftermarket CD box from CDI (partno. 115-3301).......expensive 250-350 dollars.

4. Convert to an old school battery ign. system with points.............cheap but need more maintain then a CD system.

And no. 5. Buy a Vellemann transistor ignition kit K2543...........not so cheap as the no.4 (old school battery system). It is about 45 dollars.

This is a transistor assisted ign.system, not a CD system like the MagnaPower I. It reduces the currentflow through the points to milliamps and the ware and tear of the points will be about zero. Maintainance of the points will be reduced. It still use the points to trigg the timing.
It has faster switching then an old school points system. This will result in smoother idling and better performance at low and high speed and hopfully better fueleconomy.

The Magnapower system works like this:
A transformer in the CD box steps up the 12VDC to about 270-300VDC, this voltage is stored in an capacitor, then the points or preamp (electronic eye/switch) is trigging the capacitor to dump the voltage to the primeside of the ign.coil.

The Vellemann transistor ign. kit K2543 is actually for cars, but as the Magnapower I is similar (uses a distributor, battery fed and have points). I think this will work.
I have seen threads here about putting on MSD ign.system (for cars) and it works. Do not know how much MDS systems costs, but think it work as same as the Vellemann system.

You have to build it yourself, but if you are handy and I think you must be that if you own an old OB , can handle a soldering iron, then no problem to fix this unit.

I have bought one of this kit and I have put it together (took about 1,5 hour to solder and put it in a plastic box) this weekend.

I will try this on a 75Hp Chrysler I am rebuilding right now. Have had the powerhead bored 030 OD and put in new Wiseco pistons.
Actually the engine is a 1966 model with old school ign.system with distributor and points.

Anyone out there tried this?????
