"Many mechanics don't know this either... If you overheat your engine then you need to remove and reseal your outdrive. Yep. Sounds like a line of crap but it isn't. The hot exhaust passing through the drive housings will melt several drive seals and may also actually melt the water pump housing on some drives. This is really important and is frequently missed or ignored leading to thousands of dollars of repairs to the drive."

I found this on another site and I am wordering if I need to reseal my drive? I have a couple of questions?
1. Roughly how much does this cost
2. Is this possible for the DIY' er

The reason I ask is because I drove the boat for about two minutes with a bad impeller and shut the boat off when I smelt burnt plastic. This was 4 yrs ago and the boat hasnt been driven since I would really appreciate some guidance.

the only thing you might damage is the pump base which is part of a compleat pump kit

the motor and exaust hoses would have a meltdown long before the drive

dont no what kind of drive you have ?

many of the seals are hard to change

tommays

Assuming weare talking Merc. alpha drive you would be O.K. most likely. When you change the impeller you'll see if the pump is melted. Not hard to change.

cosander, My merc 470(3.7litre)sprung a hole in the heat exchanger last year allowing the coolant to escape through the outdrive and the engine overheated. I fixed the heat exchanger and all was well(or so i thought) I started the boat this year and noticed it was running to hot, pulled the bottom of the outdrive off to change the water pump and noticed the housing for the pump and the upper housing(i think they call tis the water pocket cover were severely heat blistered) I went to change these and started snooping around. I found more unrelated problems with water getting into the u-joint bellows and screwing the yoke seal and gimbal bearing.
I guess what i have learned from this is to investigate for potential problems after a breakdown(ie:check the water pump after a severe overheat) and to remove and inspect the outdrive as a winter shutdown procedure.
If your going to change your water pump, outdrive oil or "what have you" once a year, why not do it at the close of the season. Then you can find any problems before they have a chance to do any major damage. When spring comes you are ready to rock and roll.
Just my 2 cents, take it or leave it H/j
