I have a 1983 305, 228 Mercrusier with no spark.
I've rebuilt the distributor, replaced the coil, plugs and wire harness. Everything is new except the ignition amplifier. What does the amplifier do. Does it fail often and can it be checked? I only know it's very expensive. The boat sat for two years in pretty harsh conditions.

Thanks,
Rockyrunjack

Re: ignition amplifier

It does not fail often but will. It mainly controls timing at different rpm's. Here is a flow chart for testing.

Testing

Re: ignition amplifier

Have you tried running a jumper wire to the positive side of the ignition coil? Could be a power issue..

And when you rebuilt the distributor, did you replace the trigger?

Scott..
