alot of things will WORK.
But to work best, stay CG compliant, and help ensure trouble free boating...
you should really use a factory coil.

Not all 12v coils are equal. Some require external resistance and some do not.

Most would use a 12v coil requiring external resistance, and certainly ANY stock points based ignition is this way.

If you are replacing an existing coil it should be marked on the outside if it has an internal resistor or requires an external resistor.

also check for compatability between a points system and electronic system
