I was wondering if I could put a MSD Blaster 2 coil in place of the ignition coil for the Thunderbolt Ignition. My brother can't use the MSD for his application. I cannot seem to find any specs on the Thunderbolt Ignition coil. Are they the same?

Re: Ignition Coil, Thunderbolt Ignition

I have found that aftermarket coils don't perform any better than the original equipment coil on a T-bolt ignition system. Some, especially those intended for use with a CDI system, degrade performance. I would stick with the OEM coil unless you are going to use the MSD 6M-2 box with the Blaster coil.

Can you use it, sure. I have a mallory coil on mine, nut my motivation was not performance, it was $30 less than the merc coil. Like Dave said, if your coil is still good then the swap won't do anything for you.

Thanks Dave and 180: My motivation was not performance but price. I was looking at the MSD because my brother has one he is not using (blaster 8202) and the price was great $0.00
The merc is selling is around $35.00. Again not looking at performance just was interested in someone else's opinion on what could be used. I will go back to stock.
