I'm thinking about converting my breaker point ignition system to the electronic ignition. I have a 1986 3.0L Mercruiser i/o. Any thoughts as far as what manufacturer's kit to use, is it worth the trouble(is it trouble?) pros and cons, any other suggestions or comments are welcome, thanks

Re: Ignition conversion

Petronics are the cheapest and easiest to switch. Just keep a new set of points and condensor as back-up.

Re: Ignition conversion

I've used pertronix in collector cars and boats and can honestly say I've never had any trouble (knock wood). The best thing about these units is they are not affected by the boating enviroment and they spark instantly.Timing also stays dead-on, something you can't say about points.

Re: Ignition conversion

I'm using the Hot Spark brand conversion kit and coil. I was also able to get rid of the ballast resister and associated wiring. No problems at all.
