Howdy,

I have this 71 buick 155 v-6 with your standard ignition setup. Ya know, points in the distributor, ballast resistor. I was wondering if it would be worth it to convert it to an electronic setup and if so, what would be the necessary steps to complete this task???

Thanks

Re: Ignition conversion

The conversion kit is very simple to install, it's about like changing points. No performance gains whatsoever. You may get easier starting. The main advantage is you never have to replace points again. I repeat, there is no performance gain. Your boat will not go faster.

Re: Ignition conversion

I was mostly interested in not having to work with points and what not anymore. Not too worried about performance gains.

Thanks

Re: Ignition conversion

I have heard that if you inadvertently leave the key in the run position you will fry the electronic conversion, thus leaving you SOL in the water.
Several cronies have related this tale of woe.

Re: Ignition conversion

That is true with the original Pertronix unit. I did fry them by leaving the ignition on without running the engine while doing a compression test. I always worried about leaving the boat idling at the dock for the same reason. They Ignitor II a newer version from Pertronix that costs about $20 more does not have that feature.

Re: Ignition conversion

ithrowgirls, I agree with dieselwalt, better cold starting (stronger spark). I dont like electronic ignition simply because it is difficult to diagnose & repair out on the water if it fails. Points can be cleaned or replaced easily. Did you solve your overheating problem? Aldo
