specs: 1993/94 90HP mercury outboard bearing serial # od205997.

im fairly new to boating but thanks to this board, my learing curve is way up.

my o/b won't start and here is what I did to troubleshoot.

made sure I had fresh fuel. Checked - lots of fuel leaked out of the carb when I tilted the motor up all the way.

next I checked for spark.

no spark in cylinder # 1
little or no spark in cylinder # 2
did not check cylinder # 3.

I can really use some guidance as to what to check or do next.

should I change the CDI switch box? where is it located?

thanks folks in advance for reading this.

Jon

Re: ignition lacks spark

First remove the plastic cover on the electrical componets[starboard side of engine] next unplug the blk/yellow wire at the switch box[ck for spark all cyl] no spark if you have a OHM meter or DVA get back and we will give you specs. Don't just through parts at it, like so many marinas do, test it and only buy what you need, parts are very costly.

Hi Laddies,
Here is what I did. Please see photo. I removed black/yellow wire and checked for sparks. No sparks on any of the plugs. Please advise further. Thank you very much for your assistance.

Re: ignition lacks spark

Ok there are 3 sets of spec for the stator and I have to know a couple of things. To tell the differance in the stator I need to know if the flywheel has a flex plate (it will be bolted together) or if it is cast in one peice and look up underneath it and see if the stator is red or black

Hi Laddies

I didn't know what a stator is nor its position but followed your instruction and googled online and I can confidently say that the stator is black and it is located underneath the flywheel.

the flywheel itself is cast in one piece because I did not see and bolts on the topside of the flywheel.

I hope that helps you to help me I.D. the problem.

regards
JC

Re: ignition lacks spark

Start by checking Ohms on stator and trigger wires. first the stator. you should have 3250 - 3650 Ohms between the blue and ground. You should have 75 - 90 Ohms between the red and ground. next the trigger. you should have 800 - 1400 Ohms between the brown and white/black, white and white/black, and Purple and white/black.

Re: ignition lacks spark

help me out here a bit fellas
The key should be in the "on" position before I can get any electricity current going through the wire right?

secondly, where is the trigger located?

will start measuring the currents tomorrow per rick's info.

regards
JC

Re: ignition lacks spark

Don't turn the key on. Disconnect wires at the switch box to test Ohms.

Re: ignition lacks spark

The trigger is at the other end of the brown, purple , white, and white black under the flywheel. you want the ends at the switch box.

Re: ignition lacks spark

Morning Rick and everyone, feel free to chime.

here are the findings and how I got it.

Trigger - Multimeter set at 2000 OHMS. all 4 wires were removed from switch box.
brown - white/black = 1216
white - white/black = 1232
purple - white/black = 1217

Stator - there were 5 wires for the stator: blue, red, black [ground] and 2 yellows.

I removed the blue and red from switch box. Black was also removed as it was grounded on the engine.

results:
red - black: multimeter set at 200 OHMS and the reading was 106.

Blue - black: multimeter set at 20k and at 2000 OHMS. reading was 1 for both settings.

assuming that I did everything correct, would it be safe to assume that the Stator is bad?

regards

JC

Re: ignition lacks spark

The blue looks real low. Do you have have DVA on your multi-?meter

Re: ignition lacks spark

Hi Rick

here is what I have on my multimeter.
OHMS, VDC, VAC, AAC, M, ADC, and BAT.

doesn't look like I have DVA on my meter.

From my research, it looks like I will need a flywheel puller in order to remove the flywheel and replace the stator? Is it pretty straight forward remove and replace? Anything I should look out for?

can you confirm?

thanks Rich.
