Hi guys, im here again. Obviusly becouse I have a problem again.

I fixed almost everything last summer and yet again something new comes up.

So the deal is that it runs almost all the time on one cylinder(#2), so i did everything to diagnose the problem.

-changed the sparks
-did a compresion test
-did the carb reasembely(new gaskets)
...

So today i made a spark tester with 1/4" gap. When i was checking for sparks with the plug out there was always a strong blue spark.

so i hook up the spark tester, and by my suprise a few strong blue sparks accros the gap and then few really weak ones, and again and again...
Its like that for all 3cly.

So what is the problem amplifier, powerpack, coil?

I have to mention that 1 of 2 braker points are bad, so i cleaned it and reset in to .010".

So i dont forget, the motor is 60ESL71C 3cly.

thanks, and hopefuly someone knows where the problem lies.

Re: Ignition on Johnson 60hp

Ok, i just replaced the coil and at first there was improvment , but in a minute the spark became errati again.
I tried Joe Reevs amplifier test with a light bulb and it lights up, so the amplifier is ok...

so i was twiching with the cables an ect... so i turned ti timer base plate and the spark was stedy and strong. Then it must be the points, right?

And there is another dilema, i just replaced the impeler and wanted to add a pee hole. i have water at the thermostat and its cooling ok, but there isnt any pressure when i remove a screw on the powerhead behind the thermostat.

There is water flowing but no pressure, I running on muffs.
On the picture im geting water on the black arrows and no water on the red ones. its not my motor, just borowed the picture

Is this ok? There should be a proppet valve, right, but i cant find it.

Thanks,jole

A amp can test good and still be bad, also low voltage imput to amp will cause a weak spark.Remove all the "monkey nut" clippers and retest.

Re: Ignition on Johnson 60hp

Hay again, I finaly got to my boat after a long time.

So i got new points and installed them, and still the same. Spark is bad, just every now and then its strong and blue.

I gave up and installed automotive coil and ignition assy, and now it runs ok untill 3k rpm, then the spark starts to fade and cutts off. But on the idle and till 3-4k rpm its strong and constant.

Any of you have an idea?

thanks

Re: Ignition on Johnson 60hp

(Point Setting Of Battery Capacitance Discharge)
( Ignition Models - 1968 thru 1972)
(Some have points - Some do not)
(Joe Reeves)

The points must be set to .010 but no wider than .010..... BUT in some instances due to a possible slight inaccurately machined crankshaft lobe or a slight offset of one set of points, a setting slightly less than .010 would be required as follows.

Whether the crankshaft has two or three lobes, when setting the points, check the setting of the points on each individual lobe by rotating the crankshaft by hand.

You may find that setting one set of points to .010 on one lobe, then turning the crankshaft to the next lobe, the gap measures .011 or .012 (too wide). This is where you would need to close that gap down to the required .010. A gap too wide can result in a ignition miss when throttle is applied.

Bottom line, pertaining to the point setting at the various lobe locations____ .010, .010, .009, is okay____ .010, .010, .011 is not!

Re: Ignition on Johnson 60hp

Thanks Joe, but i did exactly as you wrote it when I was changing the points. 0.010 inch is in metric 0.25 mm, correct me if i am wrong, so every gap is 0.25 or less.

I have no knowledge of the metric system, sorry.

The red arrow..... that is a water outlet passageway when the thermostst opens.
