HI,

I have a OMC Saildrive - model 15S10S - 15 h.p. that just won't start. I made a lot of tests and so far the results are the followings:

1- I don't have sparks when I use the keyswitch to try to start the engine;

2- I have sparks when I hand cranked the engine but it doesn't start the engine;

3-I made the keyswitch test as provided in the shop manuel and the switch seems to be ok (its a new switch that I recently changed);

4-I made a continuity test for each wire from the keyswitch to it's destination point and there are no shorts in the wires;

5- I tried to disconnect the kill wire (black and yellow wire) and I still couldn't start the engine manually and I still didn't had any sparks when I used the keyswitch to try to start the engine;

5- I made a resistance test on the Charge Coil. According to the shop manual, I should have read 475 ohms but it showed 0

5- The resistance test of the sensoir coil however was ok;

6- I recently changed the power pack and both ignition coils

7- I tested the starter and the solenoid and both seems to work well

8- I checked the fuel system and every thing seems to be ok

9- When I removed my sparks plug I saw some humidity on one of the plug. I open the head and I found a bit of water in one of the cylinder

Could my ignition problems be resolved by changing the charge coil ? I don't know that much about engine so I dont't know if there could be a link between the charge coil and the ignition problem.

Could it be because there is water in the engine ?

Please help me before I change every part of that!!!!!engine

Re: Ignition problem

I'll try to help; did the engine run before you replaced the switch? If so, I'd suspect it or its wiring. Make sure the spark tests are accurate-sounds very strange that manually starting sparks when electric doesn't. Sounds like a short.

If the charge coil is bad, you won't run.

How did water get into the cylinder? Is there water in your oil? If so, that is a problem.

Re: Ignition problem

Thanks for your help,

The problem was there before I changed the switch. Actually, that's the reason why I changed the switch because I though that it could have solve my problem.

Its a two cylinder so the oil is mixed in the gas. I don't think that I have water in there. As for the reason why there is water in the cylinder I don't know for sure. Could be a bad gasket or a leak in the cooling system !!!

Just to make sure I understand correctly what you said. If the charge coil is bad it won't start at all ? Or will it start and stop shortly after ?

Thanks

Re: Ignition problem

I doubt it will start since the spark won't have enough power/voltage. The strange thing is that there was a spark at all, but maybe it is from the other coil. (Assuming there is one coil per cylinder). Actually, you should be on the other forum for outboards, I think.
