I've got a 1980 merc 200(20hp, 2 cylinders) with bad ignition on cylinder #1. While running it in a barrel in gear I tried to adjust the timing but when I throttle up cyl #1 misses terribly - I changed the plugs - no effect. I was thinking it may be the coil but then thought that a bad coil won't fire at all - correct me if I'm wrong on that. Could it be the stator or switch under the flywheel? It has the thunderbolt elect. ignition.

I was looking at the plugs and the #1 plug looks brand new with no fouling on it at all. I saw another post with a similar problem and the consensus was that there was water getting in the cylinder and steam cleaning the plug and at the same time causing the misfire.

So what do you think would be the culprit? A leaky gasket or an electronic/coil problem?

Any help would be appreciated- I'm leaving Thursday to go fishing and I need this motor to work!

Thanks

OK,

Just found out that the motor is actually a 1972 model and most likely has points for the ignition, not electronic ignition.

Again any help is appreciated.
