ignition problems

I went out saturday and the boat started with no problems. But when it was time to come back, the boat started fine the first time, but stalled when i put it in gear. Sometimes it will do this. but when i went to start it a second time the starter just "clicked" like the batteries were dead. I put them on charge that night and came home from work the next day and tried to start the boat and the same thing happened. so then had someone tell me the starter could be bad, so i had that rebuilt which still turned out the same result, "clicking". And also noticed that the outdrive had no powe after this happened. It is an older boat, a 1984 24' Bayliner Cierra with a Volvo Penta 305 in it. Any suggestions on what to look for next would be greatly appreciated.

Re: ignition problems

Welcome to Iboats.

Doesn't sound like you have an ignition problem, but a power supply problem.

First thing to do is to remove, and clean all the connections between the battery and block/starter. If the cables have any corrosion on them (green growth in the wire strands), they need to be replaced.

Have the battery tested at your local parts house to ensure it has enough amps left in it to do the job (voltage means squat).

If you have a battery with wing nuts, and you're using said wing nuts, remove them and put them in your bin full of nuts and bolts. They are junk, and should be replaced with nylock nuts.

Re: ignition problems

Thanks RogersJetboat454. I will have the batteries tested then start searching wires. I appreciate the help.
