Guys,

Have 94 Merc Sport Jet 90 SN# OEO43580(Force powerhead). It just died and has no spark. It has the red stator.

I have the Clymer manual for this engine and have some questions it doesnt answer.

1) What is the resistance supposed to be between the two yellow wires from the stator and from each yellow wire to ground? Mine has zero resitance between two yellow wires.

2) What is the resistance supposed to be between grm/wht or wht/grn and ground wires on the stator? (My resistance between the grn/wht and wht/grn is 600 ohms (correct according to www.outboardparts.com website)).

3) How do you troubleshoot the adaptor between the red stator and the switch box? I right now have 120 ohms between wht/grn or grn/wht and blue or black, and 450 ohms between blue and black, and no conductivity between wht/grn and grn/wht.What the heck is that thing (capacitor or resistor???)

4) My voltage regulator has no conductivity between either yellow wire and the ground (reversing terminals is also no conductivity). Book says this is not correct, just wanted to confirm.

Trigger checked out OK (1200 ohms).

So far the only thing I have found out of spec is the voltage regulator. If this is bad, will this cause a no spark condition?

Thanks, Ken

Ignore my ohm readings on question # 3. They were in error.

Anyone want to take a guess?

Ken

Forget question # 1. I figured it out.

But about the regulator.

If the regulator is bad, will this cause a no spark condition?

Ken

OK, Ken...charging system and ignition system are separate and unrelated to each other, even though they share a common component, the stator...a failure in the charging sysatem will NOT affect the ignition, and vice versa......have you pulled the black/yell kill wire off the rev limiter yet? they often cause this problem....
