ignition questions 4.3l 199o omc

Looking at this distributor, it has points, looked up tune up specs in climber manual, two chapters have different tune up specs, one says base timing at idle is 6 deg before tdc, the other says one degree before? prestolite distributor. Also, points are burned, had msd destributor, no resistor wire, but I think it is a 12 volt coil., so this may be ok? any advice for the timing and the balast resistor, Help!

Coil says MSD, aftermarket, nothing about a balast resistor, but do notice the alt wire going to the starter , like a gm car with a balast resistor circuit, just no resistor.
