Ignition Switch?

My pontoon boat wouldn't start over the weekend so I bought a new battery because I have had problems with it going dead in the past so I figured that must be what it is. When I hooked it up it sparked pretty badly and the motor was trying to start when the key wasn't even in the ignition. Does this sound like it might be the ignition switch?

Re: Ignition Switch?

most likely your starter solenoid contacts are welded internally from the low voltage of the old battery. but you would get better help posting this in you engine manufacturer forum

I agree, sounds like a stuck solenoid, easy fix.

If you are in a hurry to get it going check NAPA, they have quite a few outboard parts.

When you go to put the new one on DISCONNECT THE BATTERY, otherwise you may ruin something else, don't ask how I know this.
