The boat owner lost the key to the boat I have. Can I just buy any 4 position starter switch and swap it out? I called a local store and asked for a price and he said he needs to know alot more. What are the different considerations? Thanks

What motor? Outboard, I/O, inboard?

What year?

What controller?

1969 160 Mercruiser Inboard, single lever side mount controller (i think that's what you're asking right? Re: controller)

Look around the keyhole for a letter code. If you find one, take that code to the dealer and they will supply a key. Alternatively, take the boat to the dealer and let them use their "try-out ring" which is a ring with all the available keys. Find the one that works and buy some.

Re: Ignition Switch

Thanks st, i bought this boat privately. What do you mean by dealer? Or a boat dealer? Marine Parts dealer? Just trying to figure out where to go. Thanks

Yes -- any boat dealer that sells boats powered by Mercury outboards or Mercruiser I/O's. There aren't very many keys so this is not a painstaking process. If you know a couple of people with Merc powered boats, borrow their keys. If one of them works, look for the code on the key.
