I have a 1972 55hp which had magna power ignition on it. 2 days after I bought it in may the cd box went bad, found a new one online and bought it and the motor fired right up again. took it out the next weekend and a few hours of fishing later the cd box goes bad again. (no spark) didn't want to replace it again so I converted it to battery ignition. I used 2 brand new 12v coils with resistors all new spark plug wires new plugs and new wiring to coils and points. also installed condensers. I have a factory manual and wired it up per that. it worked for a few weeks then the coil for the number 1 cylinder stopped working. hoping it was just a one time thing I bought a new coil and it ran good again. just had the boat out last night and the coil went bad again. (also replaced the key switch and wire harness from another motor to eliminate that as a problem and checked point gap) my question is what am I missing that would keep causing my ignition system to go bad all the time? thanks

Automotive coils?
They have a resistor built in?
They might be getting too hot because most coils only need 9v.
How hot did the coil get, so hot you can't touch it?
Then swap it for a resistor coil or install a resistor.
