What is the required timing for this engine and at what RPM?
I know I need to place a jumper between 2 wires to get to base timing mode but where is the connector and what colors are the wires?
Thank you for your response.

Howdy Joe

Not a VP expert but the GI from what I have found is the same as the Merc which uses the carb distributer cap. This motor is not timed in the conventional meaning and ot controlled by the computer. You don't use a timing light and move the distributer. If it's running OK without issues, the timing does not need to be messed with.

What are you experiencing to cause a concern?

I am just finishing up with an engine swap due to a cracked block.
I lined up the timing marks for initial startup. My timing light shows 4 deg BTDC at an idle currently.
Any help would be great.

If its running good I would go boating. The computer should handle everything. If it acts up, then there are a couple adjustments but in most cases it isn't needed. There is a Merc service bulletin but only says to adjust if there are performance issues, backfiring and such.

The worst part of the system is the distributer cap, many call them crap caps. You can start getting so misfiring and look at the cap and find nothing wrong, looks perfect. Replace the cap and all is good again. Many pack a spare for just in case

I checked the timing and I had it close by eye. 4 deg. BTDC From what I can find timing should be 8 deg. BTDC so I adjusted the timing with the black and white/black stripe wires connected. 1000 RPM. Engine runs nice with no surging.
