Ignition troubleshooting help

I have a 1986 OMC I/O in my houseboat. Lately I have been having an issue where the engine will not turn off. The engine starts and runs beautifully but will not turn off when the key is moved to the off position. I have to pull the wire off the coil and I'm tired of getting zapped. Where should I start looking? Is this as simple as a bad ignition switch or should I be looking somewhere else?

I took out the alternator to get it tested and am going to buy a new switch as well. I was just wondering of there was anything else I might look at so I don't miss something obvious.

The reason I asked about the alternator is that sometimes new alternators are put in and they can leave the ignition energized after the ignition is turned off.

I agree with bruce. I would mark then remove the small plug in wires off the alternator then tape then up and start the engine. If the engine still refuses to shut down then its not the alternator. wires should be marked sense and ignition
