ignition wireing?

I have been asking over on the Johnson forum but think maybe my thread has got too complicated and I am not getting much response. I thought I would start fresh over here since I am down to basically one electrical problem.

I just rebuilt my 98 115 Johnson and have the powerhead all back together and sitting on my boat. Everything is hooked up, preliminary adjustments made and ready to start. Here is the problem. I have no power at the keyswitch. One problem I had was the boat sat for a year before I started my rebuild and it is kept outside. Here in Florida with the humidity and rain and saltwater environment it is not good for things to sit this long. I pretty much had to go in and clean up all my electrical connections just to get my boat accessarys working again.

So when I went to turn the engine over earlier in the week I turned the key and got nothing. Guages didn't come on, warning horn didn't sound and motor didn't crank. I have double checked everything, my engine seems to be well grounded, everything looks to be plugged in but still no power. I pulled the keyswitch out and noted there are 6 wires to the switch. In the center a there is a purple & white wire, then around the outside there are going clockwise a Red &purple wire, a yellow and black wire, a red & yellow wire, a purple wire and a black & white wire.

If I am reading the wireing diagrams right it looks to me like the red & purple wire should be hot. It is not. From the diagram it looks to me like that wire goes to the 20 amp ignition fuse then to the Starter solenoid. It is hot at the fuse and the solenoid.

Does all this make any sense and am I on the right track? If I was to run a new wire from that fuse to the keyswitch would that possibly cure my problem?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ayuh,... Why not follow the wire,+ Fix it rather than a permanent jumper,..??

Is it Hot coming out of the motor, to the boat,..??

Re: ignition wireing?

If you don't have 12 volts at the "B" (battery) terminal on the switch, the issue is at the big connector in the engine or the wire leading to the switch. If there is 12 volts going INTO the fuse and 12 volts coming OUT of the fuse, it is either the wire or the connector.

Re: ignition wireing?

An update:
I went ahead and ran a wire from the ignition fuse to that red and purple wire on the keyswitch. I turned the key and the guages moved. I went ahead and started the engine since I have been dying to hear it run (a little background, last spring I got saltwater in the crankcase and when I tried to start the engine last month it was rusted up solid, thus my rebuild). Anyway I ran it for about a minute and then shut it down since at this point I am just Jerry Rigged and I need to go ahead and work out a perminant fix. Also I still have issues with the tilt/trim, no power there at the helm either.

Anyway thanks for the help.

Find the problem, propably the same for both the better you know your boat the better you will be able to fix it on the water if needed. I had 2 rental boats take a dump on me, thank to my automotive back ground I was able to fix problems both times, once blown fuse in engine compartment, another time fuel leak at carb

Re: ignition wireing?

were those marine grade wires. I wired a radio with house grade wire, and the red wire went bad. I never thought that the wire it self could be the problem, but sometimes it is.
