I have to replace a 1988 7.4 liter, and I've got the contact info for a guy that's supposed to have a recently rebuilt one for $1700 asking price. I have no idea what application it was built for, so how do I know if the cam is OK?

He should be able to set it up to run on a stand. It's not that difficult. Why would you be worried about the cam mainly vs. cracked block, bad gaskets, bad riser, etc.?

Because it was recently rebuilt, but I don't know if it was going into a street application or what.

I spoke to the guy tonight - he's telling me the engine is an '89 Advanced Auto Parts reman with 1,000 miles on it. It was in a wrecker, which was scragged. He wants $1500 for it. We're gonna see if we can find somebody with a test stand to light it off and see how it acts. He says it carbureted, has provision for a mechanical fuel pump, and the intake uses a Q-jet. I'm thinkin' we're gonna do it. Am I missing anything huge here?
