I removed my old tired 260hp engine a few months ago and purchased a rebuilt vortec engine to put in.

Im finally at the point where the engine is built and ready to install.

Im just looking for any advice, tricks and tip to make the install go smooth.

Im having the engine installed with a crane at the local boat yard, so im sure the guys will be experianced at this, but....

I just want to make sure I know what to expect.

The main question I have, Do you have weight off the motor mounts when you install and torque the transom bolts to the bellhousing?

Thanks for all your help

I thought I had a signature with my boat info, guess not.

1979 Albemarle, 280 outdrive with duoprop lower aftermarket installed. The drive with the Intermediate shaft installed in the bellhousing.

The shaft is called a PDS [primary drive shaft] and the bell housing is a flywheel cover.
There are three flats on the f/c and three corresponding flats on the transom shield.
When aligned, the distance between each group of two flats will be equal. You adjust the height of the motor mounts to get there.
Make sure that the exhaust y-pipe aligns with the riser outlets. The motor might need to be rotated port or stdb some for these to line up.
Only then do you lock down the six clamping collar bolts.
Tighten the motor mount tower lag bolts last.
btw, the inner rubber cushion does the water seal and should be new.

Have you resolved the flywheel issue? The AQ 260 flywheel cover requires the 153 tooth flywheel. The 168 tooth flywheel will not fit into this flywheel cover. The AQ260 153 will not fit the Vortec crankshaft flange so in most cases a newer style 153 tooth flywheel needs to be used.
The 168 will work if you changed to the later AQ series V-8 single PDS bearing flywheel cover, of which also needs a crankshaft pilot nose bushing.

Yeah, Im thinking I should get a new inner donut seal, the guy at the marine place said it would not need replaced unless it was flat. It is not totally round so, ill spend the 27 bucks. Looks like the last time installed it was sealed with a sealant of some sort. Any suggest using a sealant?

I did resolve the flywheel, thanks fo the advice.

You could, but Volvo did not use any sealant that I've ever seen. This ring gets compressed pretty dang tight.
You may want to wet it with a silicone spray or something to lube it and let slip where it needs to. I've removed these where they were pinched during installation.
