I'm interested in learning to cruise the ICW

Does anyone have any good ideas about how to "learn the ropes" of the ICW? Initially, I'd like to cruise from just north of Myrtle Beach, SC to Charleston, SC. After a few trips (depending on my experience and level of comfort) I plan to expand the trips further north and south. I've got 25 yrs experience inland boating but practically nothing in the ditch or salt.

I've already taken one trip as a passenger but I'd really like a more hands on experience. Any ideas?

Instant recognition of aids to navigation and rules of the road are essential, Sam.

I suggest taking the USPS or USCG Boating and Seamanship course. You obviously have mastered boat handling, but the ICW is a new environment and a mistake there can be serious.

You have to have recent charts for the ICW, you can view sections here: (order the ones you need)

Atlantic NOAA Nautical Charts

On the ICW, you can throw "red right return" out the window, you are travelling parallel to the ocean. Intersections are the most confusing. If learn the charts and follow them closely, you should be fine, but every storm season the channels can change. Be especially carful of the tides.

Getting a few trips in as a passenger with an experienced skippers is a great idea. As they say in NC, we have a lot of water, its just real spread out :D.

And watch the rocks near MB. They have made a lot of money for many repair shops.

Good responses given so far. Paper charts are what we used to go from Daytona Beach, FL to Charleston, S.C. and back. Also had a GPS.

Once you get to Charleston, you will not be disappointed. My wife and I LOVED our 1.5 day visit there!

I started doing the ICW this year. Have been out three times. Found a nice ramp to put in and I am pretty farmilliar with the area. I venture out a bit furether every time. Watch out for shipping traffic and the locals know alot that you don't so keep that in mind.

Thanks for all replies. I have purchased my copy of the 2013 Waterway Guide as suggested by Mr. Mischief and I intend to take the USCG class at the first opportunity. Also Thanks to SeaWench for his/her story. I will sail when I am prepared, not before. Thanks Again, Sam
