I try to save $ome, I have pull my boat home to do oil change engine and sterndrive,
I have 1990 Bayliner I/O, mercruiser,
however when I start to do oild change I need to warm up engine so I can suck oil out, base on maintenance manual I read,
after i stop engine and pull oil stick out it mudy water got in the oil,
not before I started it still clear and oil still good in clear,
my question is when I start engine with Sterndrive was up position that I'm towing home, is that caused water to get in the oil? ,after I clean up flush all water/oil, few times and put in new oil, and it good again with Sterndrive
lower down position, I have run for 15 min, and oil stick is ok clear and good,

Re: I'm new in Boat maintenance,

Howdy,

couple of questions.....

What part of the country are you in? (cold freezing winters? well below 32*F or 0*C?)

Was the engine winterized. (ALL water drained from the block?) Who did it?

my question is when I start engine with Sterndrive was up position that I'm towing home, is that caused water to get in the oil?

Probably not.

Re: I'm new in Boat maintenance,

dont know where you are but it sounds like salt water. I would start the boat and run a minute then shut off and check the oil. make a mark on the stick. then start it and let it run for 30 minutes and then shut off and check it real close. If you get a higher reading its water. Even if that test is ok I would still check it very close every 10 minutes for the first hour of use.

Re: I'm new in Boat maintenance,

thank you all for your quick responded, I'm in northern California and a boat being only in Delta-sacramento river in a mix water at the lower riverthat run out to SF Bay,
well the boat has been running no problem until the last month I just want to do oil change, so I pulled home a week later started to do the work and it happening, now the oil level is good not goes up, I will do it again this weekend to see if water still get in,,
my question is if I let it runing with Drive pulled up is that going to be a problem? do i need to lower drive down every time to start engine?

Re: I'm new in Boat maintenance,

Absolutly. You need to lower the drive. You will damage your U-Joints and Gimbal bearing if you continue to do so.

You are running on water via muffs right? If not you now need a water pump impeller and maybe a complete housing if you have bee doing this for very long.

Your trim up will stop and you have to use the trailer button to go the rest of the way up. This is the maximum amount up you can safely run the drive.

Yes running the engine with the drive up, may cause you a problem in the sterndrive/Transom area, But it will not put water into your engine oil.

Re: I'm new in Boat maintenance,

assuming your raw water cooled.
as for the water in the oil. being your running in at least brackish water. i would think manifolds and risers could be in question. i understand manifolds and risers don't last so long if exposed to salt. like less than 10 years.
also, here's a good read on water in your oil.. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=369864 the second link helped me get onto why i had water in my oil... it was a rusted out manifold in my case.
