I'm ready to throw in the towel on my 90 HP jet boat

I purchased a 94 jetboat and had a strange problem. It would start and run fine but only on random occassions. SOooo - I purchased a new switch box and voltage regulator and installed both. The engine started on the first crank and ran fine. Move ahead to the next day. Again the phantom appears - cranks fine - unable to start again. I'm sure if I wait another day or two it will start again. Any suggestions appreciated.

Welcome...

a '94 jet boat isn't nearly enough info to get responses on here. Too little info to comment on, Who makes your engine, and/or outdrive, or do you have an outboard engine?

Re: I'm ready to throw in the towel on my 90 HP jet boat

My boat is a 1994 90hp mercury 3 cylinder inboard motor with a jet drive that was in storage for 17 years. When I originally got it the carburators needed overhauling which I did but not knowing better I cranked the engine many times with the plugs disconnected. The boat started and ran fine after that for a day. After that it only started intermittently which caused me to replace both the switch box and the voltage regulator. On Thursday, the day I replaced the parts it ran like a new boat. On Friday nothing could get it to start. Today Saturday - I turn the key and presto - it can do no wrong and is running like a top. I started 3 times with no trouble. I know tomorrow almost for sure that it will not start again. I need to find out how to perform an exorcism to remove the bad spirits. Any idea about what else it could possibly be would be a great help???? Thanks in advance.

When it refuses to start get a spark plug tester and check for a spark on each cylinder.

It obviously has a spark when it's running but when I cannot start it there is no spark. It has a brand new switch box and regulator. It starts up fine every couple of days. It's now been 2 days (5/20/2013) since it last started. It has no spark!!! Help

Using a digital ohmmeter I get no resistance between the blue and red wires of the stator - would that indicate a defective stator???
