1996 200 Merc EFI. Trim gauge quit registering right so I took sending unit off and it turned hard so I figured it was bad. I replaced with new unit and still no go. In any motor position gauge reads down, if I remove the ground wire guage reads full up. If I remove the sending unit and leave ground attached and turn tab by hand it will make the gauge read up and down, but when I go to remount the sending unit the tab won't line up. Iv'e tried turning it 180 degrees and it's still off. It;s almost like the pivot that has the key that the sending unit goes into has turned. Is this possible? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Re: I'm really stumped

Check for a problem in the wire from the sender to the gauge. Specifically, look for it to be chaffed bare and shorting to ground.

Try marking the postition of the key-way and then trimming the engine. Makes sure it's moving relative to the housing.

Chris..........
