When I was still in the armed forces (airborne naval demolition)we talked a lot about pinging. We also talked about the physics of pinging and came up with the theory that a bullet of a certain mass, fired at a certain velocity and hitting the water at a certain angle, will produce a shockwave on the surface that is strong enough to stun fish that are nearby.
We tried the theory by throwing floating bait in the water and waiting for fish to start feeding.then we would shoot a bullet right next to the bait.
The results were mixed. The uzi bullets(9mm) had enough mass, but not enough velocity(about 450 yards/second).The M16 and Galil with their 1000+ yards a second had the velocity but not the mass(5.56 mm).The Kalatsjnikov(AK47)was ideal, a bullet at close to 1000 yards a second, managed to stun fish at most angles, although when the angle came close to 30 degrees the bullets tended to skip off the water.M1 was poor and M14 was simular to the AK47.
So remember, next time you go fishing and the fish don't bite...,there are other ways that are just as much fun.
