Impact wrench vs. pnueumatic on oil drain plug

I did search this here. I can't get the drain and vent plugs out of my 20 Evinrude.

I see that an impact wrench is recommended. Is it really OK to beat on that thing with a hammer? It won't crack the housing?

What about a pnueumatic wrench with a big screwdriver?

Right now I have just tried a very large screwdriver with a wrench on the flange.

These things are always stubborn.
Do you know where I can get the plugs with a hex head?

I know you all have this question so many times, you're probably ready to claw your eyes out. I'm hoping some magical new answer may appear here.

Wow, I just called the only local Evinrude service shop we have. It's 20 miles away.

The guy said he was running all the way out here later today for a party and he'd stop by and impact those things out. Would bring a couple of new hex head plugs and a handful of seal rings.

I told him if he does that, he'd have a new, loyal customer, and that I'd mention his shop with kudos here on the site. Is it OK to do that?

So much bad customer service all over that the good needs to be rewarded.

Yep, an impact driver works great. Handy tool for working on motorcycles and outboard motors.

Grab one, they are cheap and handy.

Worth having one in your toolbox.
Sounds like you have found a winner with the local service shop.

You ask if it really is ok to beat on it with a hammer. Not only is it ok, it is the norm. "Beat on it" is not a good term though. You will be very surprised at how efficient those things are. You don't have to whack the daylights out of it.

I'm going to get an impact driver for myself. You are correct, it does sound like a good tool.

The guy did say that an pnuematic wrench is a bad idea. Not really sure why.

Beating is a better term for pneumatic tools

A pneumatic wrench is a great tool in it's place. But removing screwdriver screws is not one of them. It's nearly impossible to keep the bit in the slot. On the other hand, with an impact screwdriver the bit is diven tighter into the slot at the same time as the torque is applied.
