I have a 1982 OMC 2.5 liter (4 cyl) with OMC Stearndrive. How do I go about checking my impellar? It has not overheated but since I rebuilt my carb I am wanting to go ahead and check things for preventive maintanence. Also, what should I expect normal operating temp to be?

I don't have a manual yet, it may be some time before I can get one and I am hoping to be on the water this weekend. Any ideas where I can get online instructions for replacing the impellar, if I indeed have to?

Can I simply hook it to water with muffs and let it idle to see if temp maintains a constant temp?

Have to see if I have the model number wrote down somewhere, but the serial number is J743145.

medic

Re: Impellar Check

If I'm not mistaken (and I may be), using the muffs or hose is not a reliable way to check your impeller. The drive has to be in water. I was able to check mine by removing the prop and situating the drive in a large trough that I use to water my horses. Disconnect the inlet hose and run the motor checking to see that water is being pumped through. Depending on whether its a cobra or a stinger, the replacements are different. Relatively simple on the cobra, have to pull the drive on a stringer. Hope this helps. Double check me, there are certainly more knowledgeable guys than me on the forum.

Running on muffs will tell you if the impeller is pumping water or not.You really wont know the condition of the impeller. It is a first step too see if it is totally bad or not but I would not depend on it.If the impeller is a few years old you should replace it anyway. It is the type of p.m. that could really save your motor and it is probably the cheapest and easiest. On the 'muffs' the water pressure from your hose will push water through the engine even if the impeller is shot. You'll have to try/do what these fella's said.

Re: Impellar Check

Thanks guys. How do I do I replace the impellar? Again I don't have a manual yet. Should I post more specs about my setup? What do you need to know?

Yep, this is it. The carb turned out well. Double and triple checked gaskets. Wound up putting o-rings on the idle mix screws. No seepage! Idles great.

Got some muffs. Hooked up to water. Let it idle. No overheat. The local boat service center is going to let me take it over tomorrow and drop it in the lake behind their shop. Hope it works when under load without overheating and that the mechanic will give me a hand with adjusting the carb if needed.

Re: Impellar Check

I am new to the boating thing. I have seen OMC "this" and OMC "that". I am looking at a manual on ebay. "seloc omc 1964-1986 sterndrive manual" All I know is that it is an OMC Sterndrive. How do I know if it is a "cobra", stinger", etc...? Will that manual work for me. The seller says it will.

Re: Impellar Check

Took it over to the local service dept and they let me drop it in the lake behind their garage. Idles great, did not stall when pulling out or at wide open throttle. It also did not overheat. Just hope it works this weekend when we are in it and ready to have some fun.

Thanks to all for your help. I am sure there will be more.

Medic
