Impeller- buzz-ruined engine??

I noticed that no water was squirting form the outboard engine (Merc. 200hp) when I started up and was in the marina- I never got past low idle speed- every once in a while I noticed water coming out- then would stop- sounds like an impeller problem- I heard the buzzer go off- didn't know what it was. (Not as much of a buzz- more like a solid high-pitched tone- it may even had been my fishfinder reading the bottom?) I shut down the engine. Since I didn't know what it was- I started it again to go back to my trailer- over all I was out maybe twenty minutes or so- never went fast- when the buzzer went off I would shut down. I idled back to the trailer and took the boat out- then I read somewhere about scored cylinders and the like- also about the buzzer- wht are the chances of my doing damage to the engine- especially if I never went over 5 mph? How would I know if I hurt a cylinder-compression test??
Thanks and I'm worried- hopefully I'll get good news from someone!

Repair the w/pump, ck the plugs for heat and hope for the best, run it and see if it runs alright, it doesn't sound like you damaged it.

You may have caught it in time, but I sure would do a comp test just to be sure. Its good to know what it is anyway so you can compare down the road.

Hey, whats that sound? Who cares, lets go fishing!

Well good news- got the boat back from the repair shop- all is ok- had the impeller cahnged- all 6 cylinders read 115. It seems on my 94 200 hp merc there are thermostats that must get hot before they actually throw water out the pee hole. I never left the no wake zone, therefore never got hot enough. The buzz must have been my depth finder! Anyway- I don't feel sick anymore!

I would think you were over due for the impleer. I would also check the thermostats and change them also if they are the orginals. The alarm sounds at about 240 and shuts off again at about 200 degrees. I would still suspect the impeller. By the amount of running you did, it would have heated up more than enough to show tell-tale water, it only takes about 90 seconds to heat up to 143 degrees, which are what the thermostats open at. Been there, done that on my 89 200 hp merc. I was in getting a gasket for my small Honda yesterday and talking w/shop owner, the sell Honda, Johnson and Eveinrudes. He says most mfgs are recommending thermostats every 2 years, says the tend to run cold after that?????

Good info on the thermostats- how expensive/easy are they to change out?

Ten bucks a piece. Very easy to change, look in the manual. They are located one on each side at the top of the head. Good luck.
CU

--------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!
