I just got a 1977 55hp Johnson electric start. I have been going through it cleaning and inspecting it getting it ready for a swap on my pontoon. I would like to change the impeller. I have a factory bench manual but it seems to leave a lot of questions on how to do this. Does anyone know where I can find detailed instructions on how to change the impeller? And where to buy one at a resonable price? Also where can I buy the factory cover decals reasonable for a repaint? Thanks for your time.

It's pretty simple. Getting the shift linkage connecting bolt in and out can be a bit fiddly but nothing major. At a minimum get a new impellor and the oring that seals the pump housing to the plate. There is a rubber seal on the water tube and on the section of the pump housing that the driveshaft exits. Mine looked fine so I reused them.

The trickiest area is the seals on the exhaust extension tube. I ended up having to replace the upper one because it had already been pushed out of place on a previous disassembly. This deformed it and it was suffering from age anyway. The lower seal was ok.

I got my stuff from a friendly dealer. I did use sealer between the upper and lower cases like the factory manual specifies.
