Hi, can anyone give me advice on how to change the impeller on an OMC King Cobra 460 i/o? so far, all i know is that i have to take the outdrive off to get to it...what I don't know is if all i have to do is replace the impeller blades, or is there a casing that has to be replaced also? Is there a kit I can get? It's also been recommended to me to replace the gimbal bearing while i'm at it? Any advice, info, suggestions?

Much Appreciated!

There were two king Cobra drives. A clutch dog design and a cone clutch design. The first one clutch dog design the impeller is under a cover on the back of the drive and the drive doesn't have to come off. The other design uses a belt driven raw water pump on the front of the engine. The cover has three bolts to hold the cover on and three bolts hold the impeller housing on. The impeller is an omc impeller and sierra offers an aftermarket one.

1987-1989 has the impeller in the drive as vinney says and the 1990 has the belt driven pump after 1990 they went to the 454 (7.4). Best advise is to get a factory manual through a Johnson/Evinrude dealer or an aftermarket one from this board (see button at top). For gimbal bearing you do have to remove the drive, need to check it for rust and smoothness, it has a grease fitting on the starboard side of the transom mount about half way down, also check/grease the u-joints when you have the drive off.
