I'm planning on changing the impeller in my 1988 85hp Force. The repair shop charges $180 to change it and I can buy the impeller for $15 myself. Seems like to save $165 it's worth doing myself.

I read the sticky and a few other threads about how to change it but I still have a couple questions.

1) iboats and other part suppliers carry the impeller but not the full impeller kit (w/ gaskets), will this be an issue? Should I reuse the gasket on there now (might be the original one) or should I make one with that liquid automotive stuff?

2) What tools and socket sizes do I need to change the impeller?

Re: Impeller Change Questions

If you don't pull off the steel plate under the impeller, the gasket will likely be OK. At any rate, you can easily make one from gray gasket paper sold at auto stores.

Tools you will need are: 1/2 inch socket and driver, 7/16 socker or wrench, 5/16 or 3/8 allen wrench for the hidden bolt, and a 5/8 six point wrench or socket for the flat exhaust snout bolt. (12 point is OK but tends to slip and round the corners, especially if the bolt is stubborn). A needlenose pliers for the shift rod cotter pin will help and you may need to buy a new stainless cotter pin if the old one breaks.

Re: Impeller Change Questions

At that price you probably get factory stuff and an oil change.
Bring it to me and I'll do it cheaper.Jerry

Don't want to rain on anyones parade here, but I bought a complete water pump kit inc gaskets/bolts/impellor etc for $55.00. The part is in the USA ( cost me $35.00 shipping to Australia!), so it might be worth doint the lot at that money?

Don't know if this is what you need, but its a Force 75/80/85/100/125 waterpump kit.

Re: Impeller Change Questions

Ive got a 1973 Sidewinder with a 72 Chrysler 130 HP outboard. I got the boat from a co-worker who hadn't ran it in about 2-3 years. The first thing i want to do is change the impeller and the gaskets but there's one problem, i cant find gaskets anywhere. Ive found the impeller at numerous sites but cannot locate gaskets anywhere. What should i do? Make my own gasket with automotive silicone, or get some gasket paper and cut one out?

Please help

Re: Impeller Change Questions

when lowering the lower unit from the motor two pieces fell out of the housing. One is a metal "cup" or seal the other part is a rather odd shaped rubber piece about 1 1/2 " long...where do these go and which way is up for both parts...the flat part of the "cup" up or the "cup" facing down???
