Impeller direction on a 25 Johnson

I just recently installed the impeller in my '89 25hp johnson. I wasn't paying attention when I removed the old one. I just need to know, does the shaft turn clockwise, or counter-clockwise. Is it bad if I put in in backwards, what are the consequences?

Welcome to iboats. If you put it in backwards it won't pump right. Some people say that if you leave it alone it will correct itself, but I wouldn't take the chance. The shaft turns clockwise, and the impeller vanes should be in so they bend back counter clockwise, meaning that when the shaft turns clockwise the tip of the vane should be bent back. Not sure if I explained it right, let me know if you don't get it. Do you have a manual?

Welcome!!<br /><br />Clockwise. If it was installed backwards it may flip itself, it may flip some vanes, or it may not. Any vane going the wrong way will obviously not pump as well. <br /><br />Kind of a gamble really.

By any chance did you lube the impeller with anything like soap?

Wow, that was quick... thank you for the fast response(s). <br /><br />No, I do not have a manual. I had my father out there with me, a retired Chief Warrant Officer in the army who was in marine maintenance. I figured he was the best manual I could get, however, he appearently "forgot" some things.... I do believe I put it in right though.

I think that guy's Merc hat was on too tight!!! He didn't replace any gaskets or rings or lube or adhesive while it was apart!!

I didn't listen to the audio, but did he even put the base plate back on? I didn't see him do it.

I wished I would have been able to see that video last night, it may have made my work easier. I did replace all the o-rings and seal, so I do have one up one the guys. <br /><br />Again, thanks for all the help.
