Trying to put on a new water pump to a small 2.5 hp 1988. I think the original impellter was never replaced. Problem is I cannot get it the impeller off the drive shaft, it seems rusted on good- metal to metal contact. I even removed the drive shaft from the lower unit, and whacked on interior metal cylindrical part of impeller a few times to no avail- it seems totally rusted onto the shaft. Is this common? I thought they were supposed to come off easy. I cannot see how I can get it off without cutting the damn thing off. Anyone have a better idea?

In the past I have renmoved the drive shaft from the lower unit and applied heat to the impeller hub. The hub is brass and the driveshaft is stainless steel, polish the shaft when you get the old hub off.

Sounds good Daviet, did you use a torch? I have a prpoane plumbers torch that should work good. Nice to know the hub is brass, BTW thanks.

Yes, I used a torch. You don't have to try and melt it off, just get it good and hot and maybe tap it with a hammer and punch.
