I can't really tell from the service manuals how much of the sterndrive I need to disassemble to inspect or service the impeller. Can I dig rig into the gear housing? Alpha I Gen 1 btw...

Also, will I need to drail the oil?

Yes, you will need to drain your oil. It's a lot easier to remove the entire drive and set it on a bench or stand. Replacing the impeller is not difficult if you are adept at paying attention to detail. You really should go here ;

and download the appropriate manual for your drive/year. It will give you detailed, step by step instructions.

The smart thing to do is remove the entire drive and do all of the suggested inspection and maintenance while it's off.

Re: impeller inspection/repair

i just drained the oil, dropped the lower half and the pump is right there on the exposed shaft. wasn't to heavy to do myself. i rested the lower half in a milk crate on a floor jack for re-installation. like ErieRon said though, attention to detail and the PROPER manual is a must. only special tool i needed was a quart bottle pump for $10 to refill the drive.
